New Faces at Santa Fe Public Schools

NORMA CAVAZOS is the new principal of Alameda Middle School. Cavazos served as assistant principal at Santa Fe High School in the 2005-06 school year. She came to SFPS in 2005 from Texas, where she held several administrative, teaching and counseling positions, including the principalship of three high schools. Cavazos holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Pan American University in Edinburg, Texas, and a master’s in secondary education from the same institution. She also is a recipient of numerous awards, including the Mirabeau Lamar Award of Excellence for School Administration.

ANNA VARGAS

GUTIERREZ will serve as principal of Atalaya Elementary. Gutierrez comes to SFPS from Pojoaque’s Pablo Roybal Elementary School, where she worked as assistant principal and interim co- principal since May 2003. Prior to that, she was a bilingual- resource teacher at Pablo Roybal. From 1997 to 1999, she worked as a district teacher-resource specialist with the Santa Fe Public Schools and was a Spanish and ESL teacher at Santa Fe High School for five years. Gutierrez holds a bachelor’s degree in Spanish from The University of New Mexico and a master’s in education from New Mexico State University.

RICK GUTIERREZ has rejoined SFPS as principal at Kearny Elementary School. Gutierrez served as principal of Kearny from 1997 to 1999. He brings with him a long history with SFPS, including holding the positions of director of bilingual education and assistant director of curriculum and instruction from 1999 to 2004. Rick also was the Title I director for the district, the assistant principal for Alameda Middle School and a special education and social studies teacher.

MICHAEL “SKIP” HEMPERLEY has accepted the position of assistant principal at Santa Fe High School. He was the principal of DeVargas Middle School for the 2005-2006 school year. Hemperley was the assistant principal at DeVargas Middle School since 2000. Prior to that time, he was the athletic director at Los Alamos High School. He also has served as the principal of E.J. Martinez Elementary School and the assistant principal of Gonzales Elementary School. From 1990 to 1998, he was the adapted/regular physical education teacher and athletic director at the New Mexico School for the Deaf. Hemperley has bachelor’s and master’s degrees from The University of New Mexico.

LAURA JACKSON CASTILLE is the new principal of Cesar Ch vez Elementary School. She has been assistant principal at that school since 2004. Castille was a teacher for nine years, most recently at Valley High School in Albuquerque. She was an intern with SFPS Deputy Superintendent Bobbie Gutierrez as part of her completion of an advanced field study. She holds a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from NMSU.

WINIFRED KRAUSE joins SFPS as principal of DeVargas Middle School. Krause comes to the district from the Los Alamos Public Schools, where she served as assistant principal since 2004. She completed her administrative internship at Los Alamos’ Pinon Elementary School and was a classroom teacher at that school for four years. She also worked as a teacher for more than 20 years in the Las Cruces and Los Lunas districts. She holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from The University of New Mexico and a master’s in education and an educational specialist degree from UNM.

YANN LUSSIEZ has accepted the position of principal of El Dorado Elementary School. Lussiez has served as the assistant principal at Alameda Middle School since 2004. He was previously an administrative intern at Pinon Elementary School and was a classroom teacher at Los Alamos High School, Broadway Middle School in Oregon, the Colegio Internacional Puerto La Cruz in Venezuela, DeVargas Middle School and Sweeney Elementary School. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Webster University in St. Louis and a master’s from The University of New Mexico, and is enrolled in the Educational Doctoral Program in Educational Leadership at UNM.

THERESE MOULTON has accepted the position of principal of Agua Fra Elementary School. She has been the principal at Cesar Ch vez Elementary School since 2004. Moulton also has spent two years as assistant principal at Cesar Ch vez. She was a bilingual-education teacher in Santa Fe Public Schools since 1981 before earning a master’s degree in educational leadership from The University of New Mexico.

ROBIN CHAVEZ has joined SFPS as dean of students at El Dorado Elementary School. She completed her administrative internship at Agua Fra Elementary School last year and taught at Santa Fe High School from 1996 to 2005. She also served SFPS as a drama and creative-writing teacher at Alameda Middle School during the 1995- 96 school year. Prior to her career in education, Chavez worked as a marketing/production manager for Kidder Peabody Asset Management in New York. She completed her master’s degree in educational leadership at UNM this summer and holds a bachelor’s degree from Appalachian State University in communication arts and theater.

KAREN SNEIDERS is moving to DeVargas Middle School to serve as assistant principal. She served as assistant principal at Capital High School last school year. Prior to joining the district, she had an extensive career in education in Michigan. She was a guidance counselor with several school districts from 1991 until 2005 and was an adjunct faculty member at Western Michigan University’s social- work program from 1991 until 1994. She also was a classroom teacher for six years. Sneiders is a 2003 graduate of Wayne State University’s educational-leadership program and holds a master’s degree in counseling education and psychology from Western Michigan University. Her bachelor’s is from Evangel University.

KAY SANDERS has joined Santa Fe Public Schools as assistant principal at Capital High School. Sanders has worked in a number of school districts throughout the state, including districts in Ruidoso, Lake Arthur and Alamogordo. She holds a master’s in special education from New Mexico State University and a master’s in family and consumer economics and elementary education from NMSU.

NANCY OLIVARES rejoins Santa Fe Public Schools as assistant principal at Santa Fe High School. Olivares had previously served the district from 1982 until her retirement in 2005. She most recently was SFPS’ principal/director of alternative programs and also was principal of Kearney Elementary School, assistant principal of Capital High School, athletic director at Capital High School, assistant principal of the Alternative High School and was director of Project L.I.G.H.T. at Santa Fe High. Nancy began her education career as a physical-education teacher at the Vanoss Public Schools in Oklahoma. She has a master’s in educational leadership from The University of New Mexico and a bachelor’s in physical education from East Central University in Oklahoma.

STEVEN OLDROYD has joined the staff at Santa Fe High School as assistant principal. He most recently served as the New Mexico Public Education Department’s deputy state director of special education and spent eight months with interim director duties with the PED. He spent six years as a senior consultant for special education administrative and technical assistance with the Region 10 Education Service Center in Richardson, Texas, and was an adjunct professor of special education at Texas A&M University from 1999 to 2004. Oldroyd also held a number of administrative positions in special education in Texas and began his career in education as a classroom teacher in Gallup. He holds a master’s in special education from Northern Arizona University and a bachelor’s in special education from the University of Texas.

ANDREA HAMILTON returns to SFPS from the New Mexico Public Education Department, where she served as a professional development consultant in the Special Education Bureau. She will serve as assistant principal at Pinon Elementary School. Hamilton was assistant principal and principal at El Dorado Elementary School and principal at Acequia Madre Elementary School. She holds a bachelor’s from Cornell University, a master’s from Claremont Graduate School and has completed course work toward a doctorate at UCLA.
