83-Year Old Student Enrolls at Grantham University

Posted on: Monday, 25 September 2006, 15:01 CDT

Grantham University, specializing in educating working adults, has

enrolled its oldest student to date, John "Jack"

Childs, an 83-year-old former graduate of MIT (Massachusetts Institute

of Technology).

"I feel great about taking a course where I

expect to get real insight into an area where my knowledge is skimpy,"

said John "Jack"

Childs. "Taking this course at Grantham is a

good way of acquiring good knowledge in a subject."

Childs is currently enrolled in one of Grantham's

graduate level courses in international finance and business. He

graduated from MIT in 1944 with a Bachelor's

of Science in electrical engineering. In 1963, he graduated with a Master's

in history from Temple University.

After graduating from MIT, Childs served as an active duty Lieutenant in

the U.S. Naval Reserve from 1944 to 1946 at the Naval Research

Laboratory, MIT Radiation Laboratory in Cambridge, Mass.

"Mr. Child's is a

true testament to the fact that it's never

too late to learn,"said Tom Macon, chairman

of Grantham University. "We're

very proud that he is a student at our institution."

Childs believes education is important whether you're

taking classes to earn your degree or taking a class to learn more about

a particular subject. The latter is why Childs enrolled in

multi-national management course at Grantham University. His interest in

international finance and business began while working for his family's

corporation, Metalweld, Inc., a chemical process equipment and specialty

contracting company. Childs finally decided to appease his curiosity

about international business, and after completing a thorough search for

an online MBA class, he found one at Grantham that fit his needs.

Grantham University offers online undergraduate and graduate degree

programs in Criminal Justice, Business Administration, General and

Interdisciplinary Studies, Computer Science, and other technology

related degrees. Grantham's degree programs

are flexible and self-paced, allowing students to complete their course

work at times and places that fit their busy schedules.

Grantham's faculty, administration, and

advisors are comprised of educators, business executives, industry

professionals and entrepreneurs. Among the advisors are Dr. D. Bruce

Merrifield, former Assistant Secretary of Commerce under President

Reagan and an endowed chair at The Wharton School of the University of

Pennsylvania; Dr. Herbert I. London, founder, endowed chair, and former

Dean of Students at New York University's

Gallatin School of Individualized Study and Dr. Mark Skousen, chairman

of www.investmentU.com,

economist, financial advisor, author and economics professor at Columbia

University's Barnard College.

"The fact that Grantham University was online

certainly helped me make the decision to go back to school,"

adds Childs. "I was curious to see what

online courses could supply and how they operated. At age 83, I'm

not anxious to go out much, particularly at night, so online is a

practical solution for me. I've found the

studies very informative."
