Eastern Campus To Host Math-Science Fair & Competition on October 20

HIGHLAND HILLS, Ohio, Oct. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- On Friday, October 20, the Business, Math & Technology Department at Cuyahoga Community College's Eastern Campus will host a Math-Science Fair & Competition for local high school students. Students from 10 schools will compete to win prizes in a mathematics competition and will also have a chance to hear local professionals talk about how they use math and science in their jobs. The event will take place between 8:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center Lobby in the Liberal Arts Building at the Eastern Campus, 4250 Richmond Road, Highland Hills.

Schools will be represented by one student from each grade, plus a "wild card" student. The competition will consist of 10 questions and the students can work together in groups. First, second, and third place winners will receive trophies and medals. In addition, first place winners will receive Palm PDAs, second place winners will receive gift certificates to Border Books & Music, and third place winners will receive gift certificates to Barnes & Noble.

Following registration from 8:30 to 9 a.m., Mathematics Instructor Brian Van Pelt, an organizer of the event, will welcome the students. The competition will take place between 9:30 and 11 a.m. Then, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., students will have an opportunity to browse information tables provided by four-year colleges, and professionals will hold 15-minute career talks. Professionals presenting include a forensic pathologist, an actuary, a manager of student affairs at an engineering college, a horticulturalist, a chemist, and an Information Technology specialist.

Lunch is provided for all participants, and Dr. Jacquelyn Joseph- Silverstein, Tri-C's executive vice president for Academic and Student Affairs, will serve as keynote speaker at the luncheon. Dr. Belinda Miles, dean of Academic Affairs at the Eastern Campus, will introduce Dr. Joseph- Silverstein and hand out awards to winning students.

Students from the following schools will attend: - The Hebrew Academy of Cleveland (Cleveland Heights) - Warrensville Heights High School - Kenston High School (Chagrin Falls) - Shaker Heights High School - Orange High School (Pepper Pike) - Hawken School (Gates Mills) - Charles F. Brush High School (Lyndhurst) - Beachwood High School - Euclid High School - Revere High School (Bath and Copley) - Twinsburg High School

Mike McCraith, instructor in the Business, Math and Technology Department and an organizer of the event, says, "We wanted to introduce students to some fields not normally associated with math and science. We want to show students that there's so much more that you can do with mathematics and science than just engineering or teaching."
