CBEE President Jim Lanich Named to National Assessment Governing Board

SACRAMENTO, Calif., Oct. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- California Business for Education Excellence President Jim Lanich, Ph.D., was named to the National Assessment Governing Board (NAGB) by U.S. Secretary Margaret Spellings. He was one of four new appointments made by Secretary Spellings earlier this week.
Lanich, a former teacher, will serve a four year term which began on October 1, 2006, and will end on September 30, 2010. The governing board develops policy guidance for the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), the only continuing national assessment of what students know and can do in various subjects at the elementary and secondary school levels.
"I'm honored that Secretary Spellings has chosen me to serve on the Governing Board," said Lanich. "As a former teacher, and as someone who has been involved in improving academic achievement and closing achievement gaps in California's schools, I understand the critical role the NAEP plays in making sure all students and schools are successful. Without this assessment, it's impossible to tell if students are really learning the material and the extent to which the teaching methods are working."
Under the No Child Left Behind law, which requires that states participate every two years in the national assessment's state-level samples for assessing reading and math achievement in grades four and eight, the national assessment has taken on a new role as an independent yardstick of school achievement. States are now able to compare trends on the national assessment among each other and on their own state exams.
The NAGB is involved in a number of activities, including: -- Selecting the subjects to be tested; -- Identifying learning objectives for each grade tested; -- Identifying appropriate achievement goals; and
-- Ensuring that all items selected for use in the assessment are free from racial, cultural, gender and regional biases.
