Dr. Lorne M. Buchman Named President of Saybrook Graduate School and Research Center

The Board of Trustees of Saybrook Graduate School and Research Center today announced the appointment of Dr. Lorne M. Buchman as the institution's new president. Dr. Buchman has demonstrated leadership in the higher education and non-profit community for over 20 years. His experience in higher education includes positions as President, California College of Arts and Crafts (now California College of the Arts), President, Kaplancollege.com School of Education, and interim CEO of the San Francisco Art Institute.

He has also served as Associate Dean of Student Services for the College of Letters and Science of the University of California at Berkeley, Chair of the Department of Dramatic Art, University of California at Berkeley and Provost for the California College of Arts and Crafts. He is currently the principal and founder of a consulting firm that provides organizational development and strategic leadership to a wide range of non-profit and public entities. He has been serving as Interim President of Saybrook since April 2006.

In announcing the appointment Alison Bonds Shapiro, Chair of Saybrook's Board of Trustees stated: "Lorne's expertise and interests are an excellent fit with Saybrook's accomplishments and current needs. Saybrook has been an innovator in graduate education since its founding 35 years ago, providing unique opportunities for students to engage in academic study of important and timely issues facing our society. Lorne's expertise in working with people and organizations to maximize their potential will be a powerful catalyst for transitioning Saybrook to new levels of achievement and bringing its distinctive approach to education to new groups of students. This appointment represents the institution's commitment to bring the world to Saybrook and Saybrook to the world to foster approaches to the critical challenges of our times that are grounded in a philosophy that celebrates the power of the human spirit."

In accepting the appointment Dr. Buchman said: "Saybrook's commitment to human potential and the values that nurture that potential are very much needed to meet the challenges of our times. The Saybrook way is to contribute to the world by living creativity as a way of life, by risking to ask questions to learn and grow, and to take new knowledge into the world in the service of self and other. I look forward to leading Saybrook in implementing its three-fold vision of excellence integrating academic education and teaching, scholarship and research, and transformative practice to develop the next generation of humanistic and transpersonal leaders as scholar-practitioners and scholar-activists."

In addition to his accomplishments in higher education and the non-profit environment, Dr. Buchman has a long legacy in public service, having served on eleven Boards of Directors. His range of service includes Temple Sinai in Oakland, The Shoresh Foundation, The San Francisco Art Institute, Creative Growth Art Center of Oakland and Youth Enrichment Strategies, a group that supports underserved and at-risk youth in Richmond, California. He has also been on the Boards of The Jewish Museum San Francisco and the National Foundation for Jewish Culture.

Dr. Buchman received his Ph.D from Stanford University and his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Toronto.
