Jan. 10–FORT VALLEY — Fort Valley State University is beginning the new year by inviting the public to its campus for a lecture series that will continue through spring.
Friday, professor Dennis C. Dickerson of Vanderbilt University is scheduled to discuss politics and religion as it relates to Archibald J. Carey Sr. and Archibald J. Carey Jr., a father and son who were influential clergymen and politicians in Chicago during the 20th century.
They, like others within their respective generations, believed that black advancement would result from their role as brokers for blacks through various social and political institutions, according to an abstract written by Dickerson.
The public is invited to the free lecture at the school’s C.W. Pettigrew Farm and Community Life Center. The presentation begins at 7 p.m.
Dickerson, who has written books and numerous scholarly articles, is also a historiographer in the AME church community, said Arletha Williams, who is coordinator of the annual John W. Davison Lecture Series.
A minister, he has served congregations in Massachusetts, New York and Tennessee.
In 2000, he became editor of AME Church Review, according to a Fort Valley State news release.
In 1990, Morris Brown College awarded Dickerson the Doctorate of Humane Letters, the release states.
The lecture series at Fort Valley State will also feature Margaret Burroughs, an 89-year-old artist from Louisiana scheduled to speak Feb. 9.
Michael Gomez, a New York University history professor, is the scheduled lecturer March 28.
The university’s 2006-07 John W. Davison Lecture Series began in November with New York Times photographer and author Chester Higgins Jr.
This is the fourth year of the lecture series, named in honor of the first principal of Fort Valley High and Industrial School, which eventually became Fort Valley State University.
