Jan. 11–A new dean will lead Wayland Baptist University’s Amarillo campus starting Feb. 1.

J.B. Boren will succeed David Bishop, who recently began serving as dean of the Wayland campus in Lubbock. Boren has served as dean of the Wayland campus in Albuquerque, N.M., since 2003.

“I grew up in the Panhandle and thought it would be a good opportunity to be close to home,” said Boren, a Stratford High School alumnus whose parents still live in Kerrick. “I enjoy working with adult students. Adult students have a purpose. They have a focus. They know why they’re going to school.”

The Amarillo campus serves about 200 students with classes in the evenings and on weekends. A majority of students work full-time jobs and have families, said Cindy Perez, academic counselor for the Amarillo campus.

As dean, Boren will manage the campus, the budget, hiring and the marketing of the campus, he said.

Boren follows Bishop, who advocated adult education and emphasized helping students achieve their dreams, Perez said.

“Any student could go in and talk to him about any problem or advice they were seeking,” Perez said.

Boren is a clinically certified exercise specialist through the American College of Sports Medicine.

Boren earned a doctorate in physiology of exercise from Texas A&M University in 1993.

Before joining the Albuquerque campus, Boren taught at Missouri Baptist University, where he also directed the sports medicine program and served as chairman for the natural and health sciences division.
