L. Michael Golden to Join Pearson School Companies
L. Michael Golden, former deputy secretary in the Office of Information and Educational Technology, Pennsylvania Department of Education, is joining Pearson School Companies March 1 as vice president, administration and planning, a new position, reporting to Steven Dowling, president and CEO.
As deputy secretary the past four years, Golden managed a department of over 50 people and reported to the State Secretary of Education. In that role he developed and implemented the state strategy to establish enterprise-wide systems to improve productivity and effectiveness in education by streamlining reporting, planning and communication processes, established state-wide connectivity to all schools and created an education portal to provide information, tools and resources to students, teachers, administrators and parents.
“Michael clearly has a broad business background and valuable experience in a senior leadership role in education and will bring a unique perspective to Pearson,” said Steven Dowling. “A hallmark of Michael’s leadership role in Pennsylvania has been his work at the local level with teachers and principals, working closely with them to evaluate their needs and to engage their support in making changes in the use of technology for student improvement and efficiency. We look forward to him bringing that perspective to our customers in his new role.”
Golden is a member of the State Educational Technology Directors organization where he serves as chairman of the Federal and State policy committee. He has served on the board of the Consortium of School Networking (CoSN) as well as a number of other educational technology and policy groups. Golden was named national State Leader of the Year in 2005-06.
Prior to working in Pennsylvania, Golden held management positions at a number of companies, including Chief Executive Officer of GiftVantage, operating his own consulting company, and positions with Sanford C. Bernstein and Company, Pepsi-Cola Company, and J.P. Morgan and Co.
Golden received his undergraduate education at Williams College and has an MBA from Harvard University. He is completing his educational doctorate at the University of Pennsylvania, where his dissertation is a study of the effect of educational technology on the performance of students from lower income families.
