VICTORIA (CP) - The B.C. government won't impose a provincewide ban on cellphones in schools, leaving the issue to individual school districts instead.
Education Minister Shirley Bond says it's obvious technology like cellphones and MP3 players have become a way of life for children and students.
But she says B.C. school districts are being allowed to take an individual approach.
She notes that some, such as in the Kitimat, Terrace and Kootenay areas, have already ruled that cellphones must be turned off when kids enter school.
Last week, Ontario Education Minister Kathleen Wynne said her province isn't interested in setting a provincewide policy after a Toronto school trustee called for a cellphone ban.
In the U.S., New York City, Boston and Milwaukee have already moved to ban cellphones in schools.
