Week for Spring Break Proposed on Thomasville Calendar

Feb. 8–THOMASVILLE — For the first time in several years, Thomasville City Schools students next year could find themselves in class on Good Friday.

But if the proposed calendar presented to the board of education Tuesday is approved, they’ll be getting more than what they give up.

The proposed calendar puts school in session on Good Friday, but gives students a full week off for spring break the following week.

Rick Jones, Thomasville City Schools community school relations director, presented the proposed calendar to the board. He said the schedule was designed by a committee ofparents and school personnel.

“We wanted to have a full week’s time off around Easter. We haven’t done that in a while,” Jones said.

Traditionally school’s out for Good Friday and the Monday and Tuesday after Easter, Jones said.

But, he said, schools are not requiredto recognize Good Friday as aholiday.

“That’s not a legal holiday anyway, so there won’t be any problem with that,” Jones said.

Davidson County Schools will be closed for Good Friday, as will LexingtonCity Schools. Jones said the three school systems usually try to coordinate their calendars.

Parents and employees already have been notified of next year’s schedule, and the school system has received a few complaints from workers, but none from parents, Jones said.

The proposed calendar starts the school year on Aug. 27. North Carolina law prohibits public schools from beginning the school year before Aug. 25, which falls on a Saturday.

Students would be out of school from Dec. 21 to Jan. 1 for Christmas break.

The last day of class will be June 6. The school board will vote on theproposed calendar at its March meeting
