Feb. 8–NEWPORT NEWS — Eight local men and women will be among the Virginia State Police’s largest recruiting class when it graduates from basic training Friday.

The 111th Basic Session will graduate at 10 a.m. Friday at the state police academy in Chesterfield County. The class is made up of 72 recruits. They spent 30 weeks training and learning an array of legal and law-enforcement related topics, including firearms, self-defense, crime scene investigation and judicial procedures.

Among the graduates will be: Michael T. Allen and S. Troy Smith, of Gloucester; Mallorie M. Lawton-Chiles, of Newport News; Jason Cordell Mobley, of Hampton; Vincent G. DeBono III, of Seaford in York County; Andre D. Jones, 26, of Williamsburg; Lannie Lester Batten Jr., of Carrollton; and Wade Lee Thomas, of Suffolk.

On Monday, the troopers will begin their final phase of training, which requires them to spend six weeks with a field training officer learning their new patrol areas.
