Drexel University Expert to Offer Tips for Parents on the Benefits of Summer Programs for College Bound Students

Posted on: Friday, 16 February 2007, 15:00 CST

Summer programs can help parents and high school students get a feel for a college and aid the decision-making process.

Drexel University's Beth Dombkowski, assistant director of undergraduate admissions, will offer advice to parents and their children on how to maximize benefits from summer programs at colleges, and get a head start in selecting the right college.

Following are tips on the benefits of summer programs and how to go about choosing one:

High school students who want to advance their skills and deepen their studies should consider a summer learning program at a college.

Students can use the summer program to develop a talent or interest in a specific field. This could help them decide what major to study in college.

College summer programs allow students to get a hands-on approach to learning.

Attending a challenging summer school program can increase a student's chances of getting accepted at a competitive college.

Parents can get more details on what to look for, who to talk to and what questions to ask from Dombkowski in the sixth episode of "College Bound" on Feb. 18. The show will air on WPSJ-TV and WBGN-TV throughout Pennsylvania, Delaware, South Jersey and Cincinnati.

Co-hosted by Brian Greenberg, certified college planning specialist, the show will cover every aspect of the college search and admissions process in each of the 13 episodes to be broadcast weekly. Drexel experts and students share with high school students and their parents information on scholarships, internships, cooperative education, financial aid, online education, career options, the transfer process and graduate studies.

All "College Bound" episodes will be available for download at www.drexel.edu/collegebound. The interactive Web site offers college seekers the opportunity to ask questions and receive feedback from Drexel admissions experts and students.
