Youngsters Reach Out to South Africa
YOUNGSTERS at a NorthEast school have answered an appeal for help to supply educational material for township schools in South Africa.Teesside Prep and High School, in Eaglescliffe, Teesside, was approached by the Hartlepool-based Huntsman Company, which has a factory in Umbogintwini, where it is one of the few large-scale employers. The Greatham works manager, Darren Barker, visited the high school to talk to the pupils about the appeal and the need for help for the township schools, which have poor facilities and little equipment. The children collected two vanloads of toys, books, paper, paints, pencils and crayons which will be shipped out to the area. The school’s headmaster, Tom Packer, said: “We’ve been delighted by the response from our pupils and parents, who have really been touched by the plight of the South African children. “The company has promised to keep in touch, so that we can see the benefits our contribution brings.”
