To rank the programs, BusinessWeek surveyed students and recruiters, developed an academic quality score, and calculated letter grades on teaching quality, facilities and services, and job placement. The ranking is based on the “index number,” which represents the sum of all five ranking measures. BusinessWeek also calculated letter grades on teaching quality, facilities and services, and job placement based on the student survey. Mason received letter grades of “A” on both the teaching quality and facilities and services. Of particular note in the ranking was the responsiveness of the administration to students’ concerns. “The Undergraduate Business Program exemplifies the core strengths of the great tradition of the William and Mary education. Our Individualized Program of Study empowers students in designing an educational experience that will provide a strong foundation for a personalized, comprehensive path toward fulfilling their aspirations,” said Lawrence B. Pulley, dean of The Mason School of Business. The Undergraduate Business major is the largest on The William and Mary campus with roughly one-sixth of the student population seeking the business major. Students are accepted at the beginning of the third year of their undergraduate study. At the core of the Undergraduate Business Program is the commitment to a customized experience. This experience incorporates a multidisciplinary approach with an emphasis on leadership opportunities and experience gained through study abroad, live cases, and faculty and executive mentoring.
The Mason School of Business includes an undergraduate business program, a full-time MBA program (21 months), a new full-time accelerated MBA program (11 months) a flex (evening) MBA program, executive MBA programs in Williamsburg and Reston and a one-year master’s of accounting program. In November 2005 the business school was named for Raymond A. “Chip” Mason, an alumnus of the college and chairman, president and chief executive officer of Legg Mason, Inc., the fifth largest investment house in the United States.
The Mason School of Business has deep roots in the history and traditions that have made the College of William and Mary one of the most distinguished liberal arts universities in the nation. Founded in 1693, the college is the second oldest university in the nation – - the first was Harvard — and educated many of the nation’s Founding Fathers.
