Cuero Teachers Get $50,000 in Grants

Mar. 13–CUERO — Armed with balloons and oversized checks, the Cuero Education Foundation “prize patrol” recently visited five campuses and handed out about $50,000 in grant awards to teachers for their innovative approaches to education.
The awards, given out Thursday, March 1, are the culmination of the fifth round of grants doled by the foundation since its inception in 2002.
“We are tickled to death and humbled to see this happen for our students and our staff,” said Debra Baros, foundation executive director. “Our school strategic plan calls for engaging and maximizing school and community partnerships and this is one way that we are doing that. We are fortunate to have such dedicated directors and generous patrons to give to the kids of the community.”
The foundation was established as a way to give tax-free donations of money, land, stock or endowments for programs and scholarships.
“Our goal is to enrich the education of children in Cuero schools,” said Ray Reese, foundation board president. “One of the main ways to do that is through these grants for innovative teaching, but we also recognize student and staff excellence, provide scholarships for graduates, and in general try to promote and aid Cuero schools.”
The top grant awarded was the $4,654 award to Cuero Intermediate School teachers Dennis Schleuter and Heather Stewart for All Students XL-ing.
Most of the grants were in the $2,000 range for various programs.
Grants also helped bring eco-entertainer Steve Trash to Cuero and funded the Cuero Science & Technology Extravaganza.
