By Jay Rey, The Buffalo News, N.Y.
Apr. 2–The University at Buffalo Law School ranked No. 77 in the nation, while UB’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences came out No. 61, in the latest U.S. News & World Report magazine rankings of college graduate programs across America.
UB’s nursing program ranked No. 72; its biological sciences program, No. 105.
Rankings for the 2008 edition of America’s Best Graduate Schools hits newsstands today, but were released Friday online at www.usnews.com. The U.S. News rankings — one of the more popular guides published each year to help students and parents choose a school — are based on such factors as peer assessment, amount of research money brought in by faculty and faculty-student ratio.
UB’s Law School moved up three spots from last year to tie for No. 77 with Rutgers University, University of Denver, University of Nebraska- Lincoln and University of Richmond. One hundred law schools were ranked by number, but 184 schools were reviewed.
UB’s Engineering School, meanwhile, slid a few notches in the rankings from No. 54 last year to tie for No. 61 with the University of Iowa. Nearly 200 schools were reviewed, with the top 77 ranked by number.
“We take these rankings very seriously, but in reality they really only provide a small snapshot of what makes UB a great university across its educational, scholarly and public service activities,” UB Provost Satish K. Tripathi said in a prepared statement.
But, Tripathi added, he expects UB’s rankings to improve, as the university tries to raise its national prominence through a strategic plan to grow and focus on multidisciplinary research.
Out of the nearly 400 nursing programs reviewed, UB tied for No. 72 with 22 other schools. Out of 250 schools looked at, UB’s biological sciences program tied for No. 105 with 16 other universities.
Harvard ranked No. 1 for its graduate business program, while Yale Law School came out No. 1. Harvard and the University of Washington shared honors for their medical schools. Meanwhile, Columbia University ranked No. 1 for graduate education, while the graduate engineering program at Massachusetts Institute of Technology came out on top.
