ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS
James Giangregio of Virginia Beach earned dean’s list honors from St. Mary’s College of Maryland during the fall 2006 semester. He is a graduate of Princess Anne High School.
Terrell Strayhorn of Virginia Beach was named to the Alpha Epsilon Lambda honor and leadership society at Virginia Tech. Strayhorn is in the Ph.D. program, majoring in educational leadership and policy studies.
Chanel Thomas of Virginia Beach was named to the Alpha Epsilon Lambda honor and leadership society at Virginia Tech. Thomas is in the master’s program, majoring in industrial and systems engineering.
SCHOLARSHIPS
Damise Osborne, a senior at Salem High School, was awarded a Merit Scholarship to attend the White Plains, New York Campus of Berkeley College. The scholarship was awarded based upon academic achievement in high school.
Lyndsay Lee, a Kellam High School student, recently participated in “The Intern” at the ATC, an event sponsored by Junior Achievement and Bank of America. She received a $1,000 scholarship and a two- week internship with Bank of America’s Marketing Department.
Khadeen Brooks, advanced fashion marketing student at Salem High School, won a DECA/Sears scholarship of $1,000, and was recognized at DECA’s National Conference in Orlando, Fla.
Neda Jeny, Latin Teacher at Salem High School, received a $3,000 scholarship from the Classical Society of the American Academy in Rome to attend its summer session.
High School seniors who are winners of the National Achievement Scholarship Program are: nOlukunle O. Demuren, Ocean Lakes High School, won a National Achievement NMSC Scholarship nJerome J. Ellis, Princess Anne High School, won a $2,500 scholarship nYasmin R. Kahan-Groves, Princess High School, won a $2,500 scholarship
Madeleine Conger, a student at Bayside High School, was awarded a $1,000 college scholarship as a semifinalist in the Young Epidemiology Scholars (YES) Competition sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and administered by the College Board.

Connie Carlock, kindergarten assistant, was chosen as Windsor Oaks Elementary School Teacher Assistant of the year.
Mary Lester was selected as Volunteer of the Year at Windsor Oaks Elementary School, where she shelves library books and works with the Citizen of the Month program.
Windsor Oaks Elementary School recent recipients of the “I Make a Difference” award are: Karen Austin, kindergarten teacher; Dima Hughs, kindergarten teacher; Monica Boyce, first grade teacher; Gail Amorosso, speech teacher.
Cooke Elementary School’s Volunteers of the Month are: Ed Thorne and Julie Paras, January; Lynette Ruess and Anne Marie Triguiro, February; Brie Scott and Danielle Rice, March.

nNJROTC won regional competition, regional NJROTC Drill Championships. Members are: Zachary Aardahl, Sean Warren, Kayla Brock, James Jones, Sierrah Willis, Kristina Jones, Alexandria Parker, Kaitlin Young, Heriberto Cruz, Eric Ma, Jacqueline Jackson, Ursela Martinez, Donavon Matsumiya, Brittany Dixon, Kaitlyn Miller, Toney Dollins, James Dwight, Brandon Embleton, Roneshia Owens, Jovi Espina, Christine Solon, Damen Graham, Rejina Stallings, Benjamin Storrs.
The Salem High School NJROTC cadets finished in second place in the Area 5 Competition held at Rockwell Hall Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek. The cadets qualified for nationals in Florida.
Salem High School and the Visual and Performing Arts Academy instrumental and choral music ensembles announced recent awards:
nThe Salem High School Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble both earned ratings of “Superior” at the VMEA/VBODA District 2 band festival at Norview High School. The Symphonic Band presented Grade V selections, and the Wind Ensemble played Grade IV. Salem/VPA Academy Band directors are Roland Ventura and Simon Garza.
nThe Salem Madrigals and Treble Concert Choir and VPA Academy choirs Vox Harmonia and Academy Choral Ensemble all earned straight and unanimous “Superior” ratings at the VMEA/VCDA District 2 choral festival at Larkspur Middle School. All four choral ensembles performed repertoire rated at Grade VI, the most challenging level. Choral directors at Salem and the VPA Academy are Don Krudop and Hugh Middleton.
Kempsville Elementary School Volunteers of the Month are: Terri Sawyer and Harold Smith, March, and Patti Somers and Karen Tressler, April.
Michelle Luchau is Kempsville Elementary School’s Volunteer of the Year.
Kempsville Elementary School students selected for All-City Chorus are: Maddie Butler, Samantha Forbes, Kyle Luchau, Meaghan Moss and Breeann Walker.
Unique Thourogood, a sixth-grader at Landstown Middle School, was February’s recipient of the American Principles of Citizenship Award.
Brittany Coursen, an eighth-grader at Landstown Middle School, was March’s recipient of the American Principles of Citizenship Award.
John Rawls, Landstown Middle School Technology Education teacher, received the “I Make a Difference” ribbon.
Anne Marie Sprague, chairperson of the Science Department at Landstown High School, is the school’s Teacher of the Year.
Princess Anne Elementary School’s “I Make a Difference” award winners for March are: Karen Kalocay, fourth grade; Becky Fanelty, speech teacher; Janet White, music teacher; Anne Spence, GRT; Sally Berry, school nurse.
Alanton Elementary School Patrols of the Month for March are: Kaitlyn Lankford, Rebecca Padersky and Jake Halman.
Larkspur Middle School students Victoria Wadford and Kimberly Truong were chosen as April’s Artists of the Month.
Landstown Elementary School students Garrett Walke, Brianna Banks and Brianna Cortez, were Safety Patrols of the Month for April.
Sarah Sykes, fifth-grade language arts teacher, was named the Technology Educator of the Year at Landstown Elementary School.
Toni Chen was chosen as Thoroughgood Elementary School PTA Volunteer in Education, Volunteer of the Year. Chen supports the PTA, volunteers in her three children’s classes and helps in various other ways.
Jade On and James Harding, seniors at Bayside High School, placed second at the recent Tidewater Science Fair, held at Old Dominion University, in the Plant Sciences category. They will participate in the Virginia State Science Fair. Kara Brown and Amy Wilson, juniors, won a Certificate of Achievement from the U.S. Army for their project.
Princess Anne High School was recently chosen for the High Performing School Recognition by VDOE and International Center for Leadership in Education.
Linda Kronenthal, discipline secretary at Open Campus High School, received the Service Award for 15 years of service in VBCPS.
April Thomas, Landstown Middle Schoo resource officer, recently received the “I Make a Difference” ribbon.
Carol Wehner, eighth-grade math teacher at Plaza Middle School, was selected Teacher of the Quarter.
Salem High School art students who were finalists in The Virginian-Pilot Student Gallery are: Dennis Thomas, T.C. Freridge, Evan Allen, Erson Baradi and Tucker Bennett. Their artwork hung in the Chrysler Museum during April. Artwork by two honorees, Robert King and Macky Angeles, was displayed in the Contemporary Art Center in April.
Salem High staff members who received “I Make a Difference” awards in March are: Teresa Vanoekel, bookkeeper; Delphia Tucker, social studies teacher; Ginny Gnadt, social studies teacher; and Angela Rudd, library media assistant.
Center for Effective Learning Staff Members who recently received “I Make a Difference” awards are: Gwendolyn McMillan, custodian; Denise Winters, reading, long-term substitute; Kai Parks, health and PE teacher.
