The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC) today hosted approximately 50 students, teachers and parents from Brooklyn's Essence School at the opening ceremony of "The Arts of Essence" exhibition in lower Manhattan. Showcasing 120 works of art created by 6th through 8th grade students from The Essence School, the exhibition celebrates the talent and creativity of the 230+ students in this East New York public middle school. "We are thrilled to partner with The Essence School to nurture this remarkable group of 6th, 7th and 8th graders and to help mentor our city's future leaders," said Donald F. Donahue, Chairman-elect and CEO, DTCC. "The Essence School understands the importance of engaging and immersing children in an active learning community that gets ideas across naturally--and lets students develop all their talents and interests. We are proud to be an active member of the Essence community."
For three years in a row, the school has earned the New York City Department of education's Breakthrough Award for being in the top five percent of schools with improved student performance. Also in the last three years, the University of the State of New York Education Department has recognized Essence for leading New York forward in accomplishing the dual goal of increasing student achievement while closing the gap in student performance.
"The Arts of Essence" exhibit culminates months of creative work by the students at the school and includes a collection of math, science and poetry projects as well. The exhibit opening today will be held in the lobby of 55 Water Street. Several hundred DTCC employees will attend along with officials from educational organizations. Students from The Essence School gospel chorus will also perform at the opening ceremony. The exhibit will remain on display through June 21 in the lobby.
To commemorate the exhibit, students will present to DTCC two murals "The Tree of Life -- Many Trees, One Earth", symbolizing diversity, community, and the individual spirit. The murals will become part of the art collection at DTCC's corporate headquarters.
"Our school strives to expand the essence of each student, celebrating and embracing the uniqueness and potential of all members of our school community. We empower students to explore, take risks, cultivate interests and flourish both as students and as human beings," said Gail Gaines, Principal of The Essence School. "Today, we celebrate DTCC's partnership with our school and the positive impact it has made in our classrooms."
DTCC joined forces with The Essence School in the spring of 2006. In partnering with this New York City Board of Education-designated Empowerment School, DTCC aims to help strengthen The Essence School's vision and aspirations for education and learning.
DTCC's commitment to the school includes the addition of classroom computers, computer training and lifestyle seminars for the staff, visits by DTCC employee/mentors to talk about careers, and renovations to the school's Family Lodge -- a unique area where students, parents and teachers can gather and talk in a relaxed atmosphere.
"DTCC fully supports The Essence School's belief that education cannot function in a vacuum. It needs to include the entire family," said Donahue. "We look forward to remaining an integral member of The Essence School family in the years to come."
