Lynchburg School Board to Discuss Sandusky
By Annie Mccallum, The News & Advance, Lynchburg, Va.
Jun. 19–Sandusky Middle School will be among the topics for discussion at today’s Lynchburg City School Board meeting.
Last week, City Council approved $27 million to build a new middle school, which will be the first new school built by the system since Heritage High School in the mid-1970s.
The board is expected to discuss two pre-design services estimated to cost $48,450. The services include a topographic survey to identify above-ground contours and underground utilities. The other service is educational programming, which means meetings with school faculty and staff to determine space needs for the new facility.
Also during the meeting, Wyllys VanDerwerker, LCS special education director, will present the board with information about the Special Education State Performance Plan. Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, states must submit the plan, which includes baseline data and establishes targets for items such as graduation and drop-out rates.
Stephen Smith, assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction, will recommend the school board approve receipt of funds for the Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs. The GEAR UP grant for $46,720 was awarded to LCS by the Virginia Department of Education.
The grant money for the 2007-08 school year will help two city schools, Sandusky Middle School and Paul Laurence Dunbar Middle School for Innovation, provide strategies to increase participation in secondary education among children from low-income families.
