BAR HARBOR – The Jackson Laboratory has received a $749,000 grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute to help improve science education and to establish better connections with budding scientists in Maine.

The grant will provide funding for high school students participating in the lab’s Summer Student Program, which targets minority and underserved high school students, and for local high school students participating in academic-year internships at the lab. It also will fund research sabbaticals by Maine math and science teachers and research programs at the lab for University of Maine Master of Science in Teaching students.

Jackson Lab is a world-renowned research laboratory specializing in mouse genetics. Scientists at the lab, which employs 1,300 people, study mice to learn about causes and possible cures for diseases and other medical disorders in humans.

The lab is one of 31 institutions nationwide to receive grant money in the $22.5 million HHMI program.
