Jun. 22–Imagine MASTer Academy, the new charter school on the former YWCA campus at 2000 N. Wells St., will host a party for its students from 10 a.m. to noon July 28. Parents and students will be able to meet with teachers and get to know one another, said Jason Bryant, regional vice president for Imagine Schools.

There will be games, music and food. A community open house will follow from 1-3 p.m.

The first day of school at Imagine, one of two charter schools in the county, is Aug. 22.

A total of 412 students are currently enrolled, but there is space for 525. Principal Guy Platter is currently hiring teachers.

“I’ve had close to 100 interviews so far to pick out 20 spots,” said Platter, who began his tenure in April. “The teaching market is very competitive.”

Imagine is one of about 50 Imagine K-12 charter schools around the country and the only one in Indiana. It will cater to K-5 students in its first year, but plans to add grades 6-12 in the future.

A charter school is a public, state-subsidized school open to all students and is usually sponsored by a university or college.
