At-Risk Education Program Expands to Include Summer School, Night School, Middle School Campuses

Posted on: Wednesday, 27 June 2007, 12:01 CDT

DOUGLASVILLE, Ga., June 27 /PRNewswire/ -- A program for students who have been expelled, have severe attendance issues or would benefit from an alternative learning environment will expand to include summer school, night school and two middle school campuses for Douglas County School System students, it was announced today.

Ombudsman Educational Services coordinates with school districts to provide an alternative, nurturing setting for middle and high school students facing a variety of issues including truancy, credit or academic skill deficiencies, social and family challenges or learning/behavioral disorders.

The summer program, which began June 4, accommodates more than 150 students. The night school program will have space for approximately 120 students each semester and will follow the Douglas County school calendar. The two middle school sites, opening in the fall, will enroll 40 students the first semester and 80 students the second semester.

"This program is better than any other program I've ever seen. It has helped my son get on track," Jennifer Opurum, whose son Michael attends the Ombudsman program in Douglas County, said. "He's talking about college, which he has never done before, and he's working a summer job."

The expansion was initiated by increased enrollment and success rates during the 2006-2007 academic year. The 278 students served during the year averaged an attendance rate of 85 percent, and 92 percent completed the program. Ombudsman Educational Services reports an 85 percent success rate nationwide, with students completing the school year to earn academic credit, returning to their home school districts or graduating from an accredited program.

"In order to help high-risk students succeed in school, we often have to look beyond the traditional public education setting and find creative solutions that address the unique challenges these students face," said Dr. David Whitfield, Ed.D., Director of Middle and High School Instruction/Career and Technical Education for Douglas County School System. "By expanding the Ombudsman program, we will be able to provide an even greater number of students with the support and structure they need to reach their full potential."

Ombudsman Educational Services is a service division of Educational Services of America (ESA), the nation's leading private provider of special and alternative education programs.

"We look forward to expanding our relationship in Douglas County as they work toward their goal of helping all students earn a high school diploma," Mark Claypool, president and chief executive officer of ESA, said. "We believe all students can succeed given the right type of instruction, encouragement and environment."
