Jun. 28–Ann Marie Williams is the new principal at East View Elementary School, the school council announced Wednesday morning.

Williams, 34, has been an assistant principal at Burns Elementary School since 2005. She replaces Julie Hawkins who has relocated to work with Fayette County Public Schools.

The new principal is from Reynolds Station in Ohio County. She has been with Daviess County Public Schools since 2004.

“I feel honored and blessed,” Williams said Wednesday. “East View has a strong, positive reputation as being student-centered, hard-working and for setting high expectations for students and staff.”

She commended Hawkins for starting East View on a “journey to excellence,” and pledged to continue to work with students, parents, staff members and the community to achieve their goals.

Superintendent Tom Shelton said Williams had stepped up to leadership positions at Burns Elementary and will bring strong skills to the job.

Shelton and Vicki Riley, assistant superintendent of elementary education, screened 12 candidates and gave the school council a list of their recommendations.

“We analyzed the strengths of all the candidates, and Ann Marie was on our list to recommend,” he said. “I feel like they made a good selection. She will fit in very well with the East View team …”

Williams started her teaching career in 1995 at Wayland Alexander Elementary School and taught at Fordsville Elementary School, both in Ohio County. While at Fordsville Elementary, she also was a writing coach and assessment coordinator.

She also has worked as a staff developer and worked one year with gifted students through the Gifted Education Model at Burns Elementary School.

Her education credentials include a bachelor of arts degree and a master’s degree, both in elementary education, and a Rank I certification, all from Western Kentucky University.

Williams’ experience at Burns Elementary School includes roles coordinating several programs including Reading Recovery data, Extended School Services, Graduation 2010 and Junior Achievement.

Her husband, David Williams, is an insurance agent. They have three sons: Martin, 8, Larkin, 6, and Benjamin, 3. Martin and Benjamin will attend East View.

Williams said she intends to focus on building relationships in her first year at East View.

“Mrs. Hawkins laid a strong foundation, and I hope to build on that,” she said. “I’m a very creative person and love working with people.”

Williams’ salary will be $80,734.

The district likely has completed its administrative hirings for the fall. Other changes have been:

— Mark Owens, chosen this week to replace Scott Hawkins as personnel director. His salary will be $96,877.

— Robin Winnecke, principal at Audubon Elementary School, replacing Diane Embry, who retired. She was hired this spring. Her salary will be $80,734.

— Cindy Galloway Barlow, principal at Deer Park Elementary, replacing Monica Connelly, who retired. She also was hired this spring. Her salary will be an estimated $88,000.
