Glynn’s Emergency Kids Clear Up Their Frequency
BRUNSWICK – With the flip of a switch Thursday at Brunswick High School, Glynn County’s official emergency management radio station improved its coverage.
WBHS-FMLP, a 100-watt, low-power FM radio station, changed its frequency from 106.7 to 104.9 at noon, said Jim Weidhaas, spokesman for the Glynn County school system.
The change was made to prevent “frequency blockage” from a radio station in Douglas that also broadcasts at 106.7, Weidhaas said.
“The blockage from the Douglas radio station was causing poor reception in certain areas of the county,” said Patrick Gunter, a technology teacher at Brunswick High.
If there were a local disaster, WBHS-FMLP would broadcast emergency information. Students at the only low-power radio station operating at a Georgia high school learn radio broadcasting, including writing scripts and operating sound boards, Weidhaas said.
The students broadcast popular music and news segments.
