‘Men in Trees,’Women’s Murder Club’ Are Among the Weekend’s Premieres

Oct. 12–There’s no magnolias like “Steel Magnolias,” the 1989 comedy-drama with a cast to die for. Sally Field, Shirley MacLaine, Dolly Parton, Olympia Dukakis, Julia Roberts and Darryl Hannah star in the Oscar-nominated film airing at 6:30 p.m. Friday on ABC Family, cable channel 37. Life for these close-knit friends centers around Truvy’s Beauty Parlor and the upcoming wedding of M’Lynn’s daughter Shelby. It’s guaranteed to make you laugh ’til you cry and vice versa.
Real-life twins Tia and Tamera Mowry are back as royal twins with magic powers in an alternate world in the sequel “Twitches Too,” airing at 7 p.m. Friday on Disney, cable channel 32.
Landry is haunted by what he did in last week’s episode and Tami tries to deal with her new baby on “Friday Night Lights,” 8 p.m. Friday on NBC, channel 2 and cable channel 9.
There’s a rogue vampire on the loose in “Moonlight,” 8 p.m. Friday on CBS, channel 6.
Angie Harmon returns to weekly television as a police officer in “Women’s Murder Club” debuting at 8 p.m. Friday on ABC, channel 8. She and her friends — a medical examiner (Paula Newsome), an assistant district attorney (Laura Harris) and a crime reporter (Aubrey Dollar) — work together
to solve crimes.
Speaking to the dearly departed is the subject of Brit Lisa Williams’ series “Life Among the Dead” which launches its season at 8 p.m. Friday on Lifetime, cable channel 36.
TLC wants three brides-to-be to “Say Yes to the Dress” in its new 13-week series about their quest for the perfect wedding gown. It airs at 9 p.m. Friday on cable channel 56.
Anne Heche’s quirky little comedy “Men in Trees” opens its season at 9:01 p.m. Friday on ABC, channel 8. In this episode, the residents of Elmo, Alaska, are huddled up in the town bar awaiting the onslaught of an arctic cyclone and Marin (Heche), who went to visit a guru, is thought to be missing.
There’s a dilemma on the season opener of “Blood Ties,” airing at 10 p.m. Friday on Lifetime, cable channel 36. A ghost wants its murder solved but it seems its body isn’t quite dead yet.
Get a “Life” and tango with “Chuck” Saturday night on NBC, channel 2 and cable channel 9. At 7 p.m., Det. Crews and his partner search for whomever murdered a newlywed bride and he has a revelation when he returns to the scene of the crime that landed him in prison in a repeat of Wednesday’s episode of “Life.” At 8 p.m., Captain Awesome teaches Chuck to tango for his first undercover spy assignment.
Peter Gallagher, Peter Fonda and Jamie-Lynn Sigler star in Lifetime’s new miniseries “The Gathering,” airing at 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday on cable channel 36. When his wife disappears and the police won’t help, Gallagher’s character discovers all sorts of supernatural goings-on.
A student gone mad while studying for a test is under investigation on “Zoey 101: Curse of the PCA,” airing at 7 p.m. Saturday on Nickelodeon, cable channel 33.
Rock on with “Saturday Night Live” at 10:29 p.m. Saturday on NBC, channel 2 and cable channel 9. Jon Bon Jovi will be your host with the Foo Fighters as musical guests.
Think of it as deja vu with an accent. At 5 p.m. Sunday, BBC America, cable channel 176, airs its “Wild at Heart” series. At 7 p.m. on the CW, channel 19 and cable channel 12, viewers can see “Life Is Wild” the Americanized version of the same series. Both are about a family living on a South African game preserve.
Marge makes friends with a jailed bankrobber on “The Simpsons,” 7 p.m. Sunday on Fox, channel 23 and cable channel 5.
The plot thickens on “Desperate Housewives,” 8 p.m. Sunday on ABC, channel 8. Edie has forced Carlos to marry her, Carlos supposedly hired someone to get him out of the marriage, Bree learns the Mayfairs have secrets and guess what kind of Brownies Lynette gets to help her cope with chemotherapy.
Detectives find out a 1950s teen rocker wasn’t murdered behind a nightclub as first thought on “Cold Case,” 8 p.m. Sunday on CBS, channel 6.
