October 4, 2011

NEW YORK, Oct. 4, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — A sunroom window box, a birdie blind, a “catio” and a hanging indoor garden… these are only a few of the innovative designs cat owners from across the country entered in the Purina® Tidy Cats® Pet Projects Design Challenge. The national contest invited cat owners to showcase the innovative, creative and unique ways in which they are incorporating feline design into their homes to enhance their lives and living environments with their cats.

The two Grand Prize winners of the contest were announced today at a special event in New York City hosted by TV personality and interior design expert Candice Olson, who also judged the finalists of the feline design contest. Rob Gaudio from Los Angeles and Glenn Massie from Temecula, Calif., both of whom own three cats, took home top honors in the contest. Gaudio retrofitted a sleek, modern cabinet into a multifunctional litter station that is a perfect complement to his contemporary loft space. And, Massie created a cat tree that stands nine feet tall and features tunnels, branches for perching and comfy platforms for cat naps.

The Grand Prize winners each received a $10,000 cash award and the trip to New York to attend a cat-tail party at which their innovative designs were showcased. The event was held at the Museum of Arts and Design in Manhattan and was hosted by Olson. The eight runners-up designs were also showcased at the event and each received $500 cash.

“I am so impressed by the ingenuity and creativity of cat owners across America who are incorporating feline design into their homes to enhance their living spaces and quality of life with their cats,” said Olson. “This was a hard contest to judge because we received so many good entries and I commend all of the entrants for their innovative design prowess.”

Gaudio created his litter box hiding station to compensate for the lack of space – and privacy – in his urban Los Angeles loft. Complete with a private entryway, adjustable ramps, scratch pads, glass doors and aluminum edging, Gaudio’s litter box station meshed his apartment’s modern design aesthetic with his cats’ desire to have a private place of their own. Massie’s life-like cat tree was created with plywood and artfully covered in carpet to give his feline friends a place to climb, nap and play. It is situated in the family room so the cats can be near the family and enjoy watching television.

“We saw everything from elaborate climbing stations and cat chaises to private cat bathrooms and fun play stations in this video contest,” said Adam Hobler, assistant brand manager for Purina® Tidy Cats®. “It was exciting to see the creative ways in which cat owners are incorporating feline design to create a welcoming home for every member of their family.”

To enter the contest, cat owners were asked to create an original video, no longer than 2 minutes, showcasing their pet project, and explain how and why they created it, as well as how it enhances their life with their cat(s). Twenty finalists were selected by an outside panel of judges and were then judged by Olson using the following criteria: creativity of the pet project (50%); quality of the entry (25%); and how the pet project enhances the cat owner’s home (25%). The public was also invited to vote for their favorite finalist. The vote, counting for 10 percent of the total score, and Olson’s judging, 90 percent of the total score, selected the two Grand Prize winners and eight runners-up, who are as follows:

  • Adrienne W., Chicago, Illinois
  • Bonnie A., Lawrenceville, Georgia
  • Christopher T., Houston, Texas
  • John S., Leechburg, Pennsylvania
  • Kari R., Pendelton, Indiana
  • Maureen K., Marshall, Minnesota
  • Ruth B, Vancouver, Washington
  • Walter B., Grand Rapids, Michigan

All 20 finalists received a one year supply of Purina® Tidy Cats® brand cat litter. For more information about the contest, visit www.TidyCats.com.
