Compliment O’clock to Boost Employee Productivity

A recent Accountemps survey reveals that the late afternoon is the most common time for workers to hit a wall. 37% of managers surveyed said 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. was the least productive time of the day. Coming in second was 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. as cited by 28% of respondents. When asked what their least productive time of day is, employees said:
8 a.m. to 10 a.m. – 10%
10 a.m. to noon – 4%
Noon to 2 p.m. – 19%
2 p.m. to 4 p.m. – 28%
4 p.m. to 6 p.m. – 37%
Don’t know – 2%
While you were too busy to observe your team’s decreasing productivity particularly noticeable in the 4 to 6 time frame, it really did go down significantly and that’s not something you can compensate for with your work alone, even if you slave away late into the night. What you can do however is increase your team’s efficiency via very simple measures.
Introduce compliment o’clock. The power of a compliment, of appreciation in general, is outstanding. How do you feel when your boss compliments you? You feel appreciated, satisfied, happy and you want to deliver even more. If you are feeling tired or down, which is very likely in the afternoon hours, and your boss shows up just to say thanks, don’t you instantly regain that enthusiasm you had temporarily lost for what you were doing?
Circulate an internal memo: 4 o’clock is compliment o’clock. Whoever you interact with – compliment them on their job, whether it’s something as big as landing an important client or as small as a professional reply to an internal memo – make sure you show you noticed and appreciate it. A complimented employee is a productive employee. And productive employees make customers and shareholders happy.
