SiliconMicroDisplay ST1080 Leaps Ahead in Wearable Display Technology
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., March 7, 2012 /PRNewswire-iReach/ — On March 1, SiliconMicroDisplay (SMD) took a big leap ahead in the consumer wearable display market by opening pre-orders on their website for the ST1080, the industry’s highest resolution head mounted display product.

The ST1080 is equipped with native 1080p (2M pixels) resolution displays and offers both augmented and virtual reality viewing modes. ST1080 pre-orders are available on SMD’s website for $699, and shipments are to begin in May.
The consumer head mounted display market is gaining momentum with product introductions from Sony, Epson, and even rumors of Google’s augmented reality glasses. Most of the products are at or below HD level of 720p (1M pixels), so SMD’s Full HD ST01080 represents a significant picture quality improvement over the industry.
Head mounted displays or wearable displays are used for video gaming, movies, and commercial, medical, and military applications. Some video sources, like Blu-ray players, output video only in native 1080p resolution, so a product like the ST1080 is required to watch the video in the highest video fidelity.
The CEO of SiliconMicroDisplay, Paul Jin, said, “SMD is a relatively small and unknown company, but we believe we have the best consumer product solutions and core technology in the industry. We make our own LCoS microdisplays in our 25,000 sq. ft. semiconductor manufacturing facility, so we have a lot of capability and control over quality.”
“Our microdisplay technology was developed over a span of ten-plus years, so there’s a considerable amount of investment and know-how that’s gone into it. We’re now seeing the result of that investment in the ST1080. We also have a strong roadmap, including the 4k2k (8M pixels) display, which we showed at the 2012 CES.”
SMD said the price of $699 is a discount for early adopters and will return to full price of $799 after March 21st.
