Pilot Study Sees Reduction in Need of Back Surgeries

PUYALLUP, Wash., April 11, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — The Regional Neurosciences Centre in Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK conducted a pilot randomized trial of the effectiveness of inversion therapy in patients with pure single level lumbar discogenic disease. The study consisted of two groups, one who went through standard physiotherapy and the other that participated in physiotherapy and intermittent traction with a Teeter Inversion Table. All participants were scheduled for operations to repair the shared diagnosis.

After 6 weeks of therapy, assessments were made by blinded observers who reviewed results such as Visual Analogue Pain Score (VAS), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and other outcome measures. Treatment success was considered avoiding surgery. Out of those who were prescribed to inversion and physiotherapy, 76.9 percent had their surgeries cancelled in comparison to only 22.2 percent of the group who were prescribed only physiotherapy. These outcomes have resulted in an investigation to further expand the study due to the potential savings in avoided surgeries and public funds in countries that have public healthcare.
