ABC’s ‘The View’ Makes No Guts, No Glory Amazon Bestseller
NEW YORK, April 23, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — Hours after his appearance on ABC’s “The View” last Friday, Dr. Steven Lamm’s new book No Guts, No Glory (Basic Health Publishing, April 2012) hit the Amazon bestseller list. Dr. Lamm is known to millions nationwide for his regular appearances on “The View” over the past 16 years.
“It was a great segment but I believe the overwhelming response was because so many people have tummy troubles,” said Dr. Lamm, who is a clinical professor of internal medicine at NYU School of Medicine. “Ninety to one-hundred million Americans suffer from digestive problems, and this book provides solutions they’ve been waiting to hear.” According to Dr. Lamm, digestive problems are the #1 complaint he sees in his Manhattan medical practice.
In addition to the obvious digestion connection, Dr. Lamm explained that gut health is the secret to overall wellness. “Who’d believe that fixing the gut is critical to defending against heart disease, metabolic syndrome, obesity, inflammation, Alzheimer’s and even Autism? Treat your gut well and it will treat you well.”
“We, in the medical profession, have done a terrible job of preparing the public to live healthier lives,” he said. “Wellness is not merely the absence of disease. Real wellness requires concrete lifestyle changes–beginning with not abusing your gut! If you’re concerned with wellness, you need to start with your gut.”
On “The View” Dr. Lamm compared the gut-brain connection to Siamese twins separated at birth. The two are constantly communicating with each other, he explained, with the gut rivaling the brain in quantity of nerve endings. “We need to choose foods for their nutrient value. Half your plate should include colorful fruits and vegetables with powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.” He also recommended avoiding saturated fats, red meat and gluten, if you have gluten sensitivity, and never eating on the run. “Eat slowly, and incorporate digestive enzymes like Digest Gold and probiotics into the diet…I guarantee that in the next 3-5 years, enzymes and probiotics will be standard, just like daily vitamins.”
