U.S. Census Bureau Daily Feature for May 11
WASHINGTON, May 11, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Following is the daily “Profile America” feature from the U.S. Census Bureau:
FRIDAY, MAY 11: MARTHA GRAHAM
Profile America — Friday, May 11th. One of America’s most gifted dancers and choreographers was born on this day in 1894 — Martha Graham. Her influence on dance has been compared with Picasso’s influence on modern visual arts, Stravinsky’s on music, and Frank Lloyd Wright on architecture. Her new ideas about dance began to emerge in the 1920s and ’30s, when she began to incorporate the rituals of Southwestern American Indians into her work. Graham was the first dancer to perform in the White House and receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Her 180th ballet premiered when she was 96. Today in the U.S., there are 647 dance companies performing across the nation. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, online at www.census.gov.
