John Newcombe Women’s Pro Challenge tennis tournament adds to New Braunfels fall and winter outdoor recreation attractions
NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas, Nov. 8, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — Long known as a premier summer recreation destination in Texas, New Braunfels is stepping up its game in the fall with a new US Tennis Association Pro Circuit event. The new tennis event is just one reason to visit New Braunfels in the fall, however. The Texas Hill Country vacations destination has many B&Bs, resorts (including Newcombe’s Tennis Ranch) and hotels for your choice of accommodations. In addition to the Comal and Guadalupe rivers which make New Braunfels so popular for vacations in the summer, there are lots of other year-round attractions making New Braunfels perfect for fall and winter vacations, too.

New Braunfels has been a home away from home for International tennis players since the legendary John Newcombe, winner of 26 Grand Slam titles, settled in the Texas Hill Country in 1968. His John Newcombe Tennis Ranch hosts one of the world’s finest tennis academies as well as junior tennis camps and adult tennis vacations. New Braunfels is already known as a “tennis Mecca” among many International players that have come through the Tennis Ranch – including one of this past weekend’s big winners, Mirjana Lucic.
Lucic, No.1 doubles seed, is a Newcombe Academy alum and she and her partner, Elena Bovina, defeated Mariana Duque-Marino and Adriana Perez for the Doubles championship, 6-3 4-6 [10-8] this weekend. American Melanie Oudin won the Singles championship beating Colombia’s Mariana Duque-Marino of Columbia 6-1 6-1. The John Newcombe Women’s Pro Challenge was such a success that plans are already underway for the Challenge to return to the John Newcombe Country Club in New Braunfels in 2013, providing a great opportunity for amateur players to see top-level tennis up close and personal on their vacations.
Tennis isn’t the only game in town; however, New Braunfels has a lot more to offer for great vacations after Labor Day. The Tour de Gruene cycling race is held each November, the Chosen: Marathon for Adoption race is held in October, and there are a variety of motorcycle rallies in New Braunfels, too. The mild Texas Hill Country weather and wide range of outdoor recreation opportunities, live music venues, and a broad range of culinary opportunities make New Braunfels perfect for vacations for couples and mature adults (it’s romantic, too) and a great weekend getaway for families with school-age children looking for mini-vacations during the school year.
The rivers are great for kayaking, rafting and fishing vacations in fall, winter and spring – and the weather is sometimes warm enough for tubing and swimming, too. There’s golf, birding, hiking, nearby lakes for skiing and boating, horseback riding, go-cart racing, live music in honky-tonks and dance halls throughout the area, and baseball fields, soccer fields, skateboard parks, and a cable-lake for vacations to learn or improve your skiing and wakeboarding. The Texas Ski Ranch offers a variety of competitions – amateur and pro throughout the year including Crossfit Games, wakeboarding and waterskiing, skateboarding and rock climbing.
Signature attractions include Natural Bridge Caverns with its spectacular show cave and adventure tours, Gruene Hall, the queen of Texas dance halls, the Texas Hill Country wineries and New Braunfels natural beauty and German heritage for vacations with lots to do. Located between Austin and San Antonio, Texas, on Interstate 35, New Braunfels offers a small-town and budget friendly vacations opportunity with access to great outdoor recreation, live music, wine tasting, and nearby attractions like the River Walk and Sea World in San Antonio and Austin City Limits and 6(th) Street in Austin.
