Napa Valley vintner Doug Shafer has seen it all and is telling it all in his new memoir A Vineyard in Napa (Nov. 2012, University of California Press).

The book details the Shafer family’s move to Napa Valley in the early 1970s, when it was a rural backwater, and in 284 rapid pages charts the ups and downs both of the family winery and of Napa Valley itself.

“This is a story that goes from the very bottom to the very top,” says Doug Shafer who writes in raw detail about the early crises and failings of the winery’s early days. Today by contrast the winery receives numerous accolades for the quality and consistency of its wines. In May, 2010 Doug and his father John Shafer, were honored by the James Beard Foundation Awards with “Wine and Spirits Professionals of the Year.”

On Friday, November 16, 2012 Shafer’s red wine, “Relentless” was named Wine Spectator magazine’s “Wine of the Year,” selected from a field of 17,000 wines from around the world.

Karen MacNeil, author of the acclaimed The Wine Bible says Shafer’s book is ” … a fantastic read about the founding of Shafer Vineyards and its rise to the top as an American First Growth.”

Celebrated novelist Jay McInerny writes in The Wall St. Journal, “… the Shafer story illustrates how much Napa winemakers have learned and how far they have come, it also illustrates the inexplicable mystery of great wine …”

Tom Colicchio of Bravo’s hit show Top Chef calls Shafer’s book, “… an inside look at how wine history is made.”

Don Winkler of International Wine Review calls A Vineyard in Napa “… the best-told story of a California wine family I’ve yet read.”
