Williams Forrest Wins Sustainability Hackathon

November 21, 2012

LANCASTER, Pa., Nov. 21, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — Digital solutions agency Williams Forrest today announces a win at the Sustainability Hackathon sponsored by BMW i in NYC November 16-18. Williams Forrest joined New York City-based agency kbs+ to form a team representing their mutual client BMW NA at the event. Team members spent three days conceiving, creating and coding an application that ultimately took first prize.

Fresh(TM), the winning app concept, is a virtual farmers market for individuals and small farms to share information about the real-time availability and locations of local produce and food. The application allows micro-farms, farm stands and other growers to post what is fresh and available, and encourages consumers to share what they have found with other like-minded shoppers.

Fresh(TM) promotes sustainability by providing an easily accessible way for conscientious consumers to “buy local, buy fresh.” By supporting this approach to sourcing local food and produce, Fresh(TM) will help promote local producers and encourage consumers to participate in reducing the amount of food transported over long distances.

Williams Forrest plans to launch Fresh(TM) in early 2013. This initial launch will include the Fresh(TM) mobile app, website, and a number of social media channel applications. The app will be available through the Apple iTunes App Store, Google Play, and Microsoft’s Windows Store.

“I am tremendously proud of our involvement in this event as well as its outcome,” said David Barr, President and Chief Solutions Architect, Williams Forrest. “As a long-time partner of BMW NA, we were honored to have the opportunity to represent BMW in this event. We like to see ourselves as responsible citizens of this planet so being able to provide a viable concept that promotes sustainability while at the same time showcasing our ideation and development skills is really cool. I am very proud of both Jason Beck and AJ Hoffer for securing this win for us.”

The BMW i Sustainability Hackathon took place in New York City on November 16-18 and promoted building mobile apps and hacks to address some of the most pressing problems in sustainability facing our future as a greener planet.
