Artist and Photographer Zaid Salman Launches Kickstarter Campaign to Fund Unique Deck of Playing Cards Featuring SurrealScapes, Captivating Body Art Photography
SAN JOSE, Calif., Feb. 22, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — Zaid Salman, an artist and photographer, has launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund the creation of a custom deck of playing cards featuring his art: SurrealScapes – Body Art and Creative Photography, http://www.surrealscapes.net/kickstarter.
Kickstarter is a crowdfunding platform focused on creative projects and over the past few years has become a popular vehicle for artists and designers to obtain the support and funding they need to complete and display their works.
SurrealScapes is Salman’s particular brand of body art and creative photography, where images are created by projecting 35mm slides onto live models and then photographing the result. “I’ve been doing this art for years and now I want to bring it out to a wide audience, but I want to do that in a way that’s accessible to everyone. Fine artists and photographers usually sell individual prints of their work, but to collect a large body of work, one would need to purchase a lot of individual pieces. I wanted to go beyond just fine art prints and create something that is actually functional, and a deck of playing cards is a great way to do that,” says Salman.
The SurrealScapes deck of cards is more than just a standard deck of pretty images on cards. Each card face features a different image, and the suit pips are custom-designed, as is the card tuckbox. The court cards feature novel two-way versions of the base body art images, and the card back is fully rotationally symmetric. The deck will be manufactured by the United States Playing Card Company (USPCC), which is the world leader in premium-quality playing card decks that are preferred by card players, cardists, and magicians worldwide, and the maker of the ubiquitous Bicycle playing cards. The SurrealScapes cards are printed on their standard Bicycle stock using their “Air-Cushion Finish,” also known as “Magic Finish.”
Salman sees platforms like Kickstarter as driving significant changes in the way art is made and creative expression realized. Artists who previously might not have had the resources to express their vision now have a vehicle for appealing to the masses to obtain support for their endeavors.
