March 12, 2013

New video combines carefully-selected celestial images, many never before available on digital disc, with music and narration to create breathtaking works of art

SEATTLE, March 12, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — Recently, the public has been fascinated by the beauty of newly released cosmic images recorded by advanced orbiting and ground based telescopes. Now the new “Art of the Universe” DVDs and Blu-ray Discs enable viewers to fully appreciate the gorgeous colors and intricate formations of galaxies, nebulae, clusters and other astronomical phenomenon via a digital gallery of 136 high-resolution images that can be enjoyed in the comfort of home. “NASA and other agencies have released astrophotography collected by Hubble, Spitzer and Chandra space telescopes and the newest land-based telescopes, but in order to access those images, people usually have to download and make sense of a 50MB file, all of which quickly becomes challenging for the average person,” said Mark Brady, senior partner at Digital Expressions Ink (DEI), the company responsible for creating Art of the Universe. “At DEI, we use creative ideas and digital technology to present artistic works in innovative ways, and we decided that our inaugural project would be making these cosmic photographs accessible to everyone. In fact, many of the astronomic images we’ve included have never been seen and presented in such a format.”

DEI staff spent six months searching the latest astrophotography images to identify the most dramatic views and cropping these selections in order to display each picture to maximum effect. The DVD presents the images at the highest possible resolution and image quality. The Blu-ray edition is in true 1080p, two-million pixel high definition.

The pictures are accompanied by a musical soundtrack. Narrators identify each image and deliver inspirational quotes from some of the world’s most renowned observers of nature and art, including famous writers, philosophers, scientists and artists such as Albert Einstein, Leonardo da Vinci, Renoir and Pablo Picasso. The sophisticated disc menu allows viewers to choose different combination of images, music and narration. Viewers can also change the quotes from audio to subtitles and select particular images for viewing.

“We’re the first people to create an ‘art gallery’ of galactic images, enhanced emotionally and artistically by inspirational quotes” stated Brady. “It’s a one-of-a-kind product that will make an appealing gift for art lovers; astronomers, both professional any hobbyist; other members of the scientific community, educators and the general public.”

Brady continued, “We wanted to drive home the profound realization, that nature has created a level of beauty that dwarfs anything that mankind has done. And that these natural phenomena are on a scale that is so far beyond our comprehension that contemplating the underlying magnitude and complexities of the images only intensifies the viewing experience, creating an element of dazzling grandeur.”

The DVD version of Art of the Universe is available for $16.99, and the Blu-ray edition is $21.99. International orders are available in Region 1 format only.
