49% of U.S. Consumers Find Pest Control Company Through Friends & Family; Vehicle Signage More Effective Than Yellow Page Ads, Says New Google Survey from Pest Control Marketing Systems

Premier marketing agency for pest control business releases new data highlighting the best methods for pest control companies to reach consumers

GEORGETOWN, Texas, March 18, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — When it comes to the pest control market, 13% of Americans are currently using a company to service their home – at least according to the results of a recent Google survey conducted by Pest Control Marketing Systems: “How Customers Find Their Pest Control Company?”

Querying 10,474 Internet users nationwide, 1,361 participants said they are currently using a pest control company – and their methods of finding said companies offered an eye-opening view into how customers are choosing who should service their home.

49% of U.S. consumers are picking their pest control company from a referral by a friend or family member. With such a large percentage of the population choosing companies based on a word-of-mouth recommendation, the survey results emphasize the importance of client retention and high-quality customer service for pest control companies nationwide.

The three runners-up to referrals are: online searches (13.1%), yellow page listings (12.2%), and truck signage (12%) – all nearly having an equal influence. The survey suggests that because truck signage is inexpensive relative to yellow page listings, truck signage is likely a more cost effective marketing channel and yields a better return on investment for pest control companies. However, after Pest Control Marketing Systems delved a bit further into the data, another interesting finding was unearthed.

While these numbers hold true for the general population, the data is slightly different for older age groups. For the 55+ age demographic, 17% found their pest control company through yellow page listings whereas only 6% found them through online search. PCMS President Ryan Levesque says, “Knowing this data, companies who focus on an older demographic should continue to invest in traditional marketing methods, such as yellow page listings, and minimize their investment in online advertising.”
