Former Members Of Congress Association’s Annual Meeting Will Focus On Eliminating Dysfunction In Congress
WASHINGTON, May 14, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — The U.S. Association of Former Members of Congress (FMC) and Former Senator John Breaux, will host a conference at G.W. University that will result in a publication, “Making Congress Work: A Guide for Senators, Representatives and Citizens,” targeted for members of the 2014 Congress. A program at the National Archives will explore how Congress and the White House can work together, and Connie Morella (R-MD) will present U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood with FMC’s “Distinguished Service Award” on the floor of the House of Representatives.
The following is the agenda for FMC’s 43rd Annual Meeting to be held on Wednesday, May 15:
WHERE/WHEN/WHO: 8:00 a.m. – 8:45 a.m., Chamber of the House of Representatives. Welcome by FMC president Connie Morella, who will present the FMC 43rd “Distinguished Service Award” to U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. The award is given to an individual who exemplifies outstanding leadership, service, and bipartisanship. Following the award, Morella will deliver FMC’s 43rd Annual Report to Congress.
WHERE/WHEN: 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., City View Room 7th Floor, George Washington University (1957 E Street, NW), FMC will host the Breaux Symposium: “Making Congress Work, A Guide for Senators, Representatives and Citizens.”
CONFERENCE DETAILS: The goal of the conference is to bring together former Members of Congress, issue experts, and university students to discuss how to make Congress work. There will be an opening panel led by Senator John Breaux and will include: former Senate Majority Leaders Trent Lott (R-MS) and Tom Daschle (D-SD); Senator Blanche Lincoln (D-AR); former Member Mickey Edward (R-OK); former Member Mark Kennedy (R-MN); and former Member Norm Dicks (D-WA). The opening panel will be followed by five breakout sessions led by a moderator. The goal of the conference is to create a publication that can be given to all current Members elected to the next Congress.
WHERE/WHEN/WHO: 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., McGowan Theater, National Archives, 701 Pennsylvania Avenue, (enter through the Special Events entrance at 7th Street and Constitution Avenue.) FMC and the National Archives will continue their free, public lecture series with a panel discussion called: “Congress and the White House, Working Together or Not Working at all?” The moderator will be Peter Cook, Bloomberg TV, and the confirmed panelists include: Vic Fazio (D-CA); Steve LaTourette (R-OH); Blanche Lincoln (D-AR); and Larry Pressler (R-SD).
