Emergency Communications Leaders Gather for Fourth Annual Smart911 Summit Featuring Keynote Address from Newtown 9-1-1 Director
From Best Practices to Technology Needs, Summit Covers Day-to-Day Handling of 9-1-1 Calls to Major Incidents Including Sandy Hook Shootings and Boston Marathon Bombings

The highly successful event featured professionals from leading 9-1-1 and emergency communications associations, as well as Smart911 Charter 50 member-customers that are leading the transformation of 9-1-1 response with innovative technology in their respective states.
A highlight of the event was a keynote address delivered by Maureen Will, director of the Emergency Communications Center in Newtown, Conn. Will’s emotional and informative presentation looked at the agency and town’s experiences on the day of the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School and the weeks and months that followed.
Will was joined by officials from other recent headline-making events for a panel discussion titled “Coordinating Multijurisdictional Responses to Major Incidents.” This included: Joseph O’Hare, deputy superintendent of Boston Emergency Medical Services, who provided insight into the Boston Marathon bombings; Duane Phillips, director of Metro Nashville Emergency Communications Center, who discussed the 2010 floods that left 40 percent of the city under water; and Karen Shilling, police communications analyst for the City of Seattle 9-1-1 Center, who shared recent active shooter experiences.
