Cosmetic Surgeon Dr. Jennifer Hein Applauds Angelina Jolie’s Mastectomy Decision
Dr. Jennifer Hein of Women’s Institute of Cosmetic & Laser Surgery asserts that Angelina Jolie employed the best decision making process possible when deciding to undergo major surgery.
CHICAGO, June 10, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ — Dr. Jennifer Hein, founder of Women’s Institute of Cosmetic & Laser Surgery, is constantly encouraging her patients to make certain that they are opting to undergo cosmetic procedures for the right reasons. Instead of having surgeries performed to keep up with cosmetic trends or to make spouses or others happy, Dr. Hein believes that women should undergo these procedures only if they are in their best interest emotionally and physically. The surprising announcement made by noted actress and activist Angelina Jolie revealing her decision to have a double mastectomy and breast reconstruction provides women with a wonderful example of how to go about making decisions regarding cosmetic surgery and, ultimately, overall health, according to Dr. Hein.
ABC has announced that Jolie opted to undergo a double mastectomy and reconstruction after learning that she carried a gene, BRCA1, that increased her chances of developing breast or ovarian cancer. After losing her mother in 2007 to ovarian cancer, the article explains that Jolie opted to have these procedures done in an effort to reduce the risk that she, too, would develop a form of cancer and leave her family behind. After weighing the options with her partner, Brad Pitt, and their six children, Jolie decided that it was in her best interest from a medical standpoint to undergo preventative surgery in order to vastly reduce the odds that cancer would emerge.
Jolie wrote in an op-ed piece in the New York Times: “My doctors estimated that I had an 87 percent risk of breast cancer and a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer, although the risk is different in each woman. Once I knew that this was my reality, I decided to be proactive and to minimize the risk as much as I could.”
The surgery cut Jolie’s risk of breast cancer significantly. She writes: “The decision to have a mastectomy was not easy. But it is one I am very happy that I made. My chances of developing breast cancer have dropped from 87 percent to under 5 percent. I can tell my children that they don’t need to fear they will lose me to breast cancer.”
While Dr. Jennifer Hein acknowledges that cosmetic procedures are different from preventative surgeries like the one that Jolie chose to undergo, she stresses the importance that all women–no matter what kind of operation they are considering–take the time to make a responsible decision in the way that Jolie has.
