Soccer fans around the world know that there is nothing quite like watching a phenomenal match in person. The countries of North America, Central America and the Caribbean are particularly fond of soccer. In many countries soccer is referred to as “futbol” and the sport is as popular as American football in these countries. The pure energy rush and excitement of experiencing soccer and the never-ending love of the game was the reason why CONCACAF was established in September 18, 1961.
The Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football, CONCACAF (acronym) is the governing body of professional football/soccer in these areas. The role of the association is mainly to organize professional football matches for national competitions between teams and clubs. The association is also affiliated with the International Federation of Association Football or FIFA. It is the reason why CONCACAF also organized World Cups that further brought football hype and excitement.
The merger of the North American Football Confederation (NAFC) and the Football Confederation of Central American and the Caribbean or more popularly called CCCF ended up being called CONCACAF. This association, similar to many other organizations has been plagued by politics and controversies in its day-to-day operations. Ramon Coll Jaumet from Cost Rica was the first President of CONCACAF being succeeded by Joaquin Soria Terrazas, from Mexico who lead the organization for 21 years. When Jack Warner took over this federation, it became involved in many controversies. There were accusations of corruption and power struggles within the organization. These controversies would happen when one CONCACAF officer would take Warner’s side and the others would side with Chuck Blazer, the Secretary General of the organization. Amidst the finger pointing about who was at fault ended up leading to the resignation of Warner, who was replaced by Jeffrey Web in May 2012.
The CONCACAF has 41 teams coming from 41 countries in North America, Central America and the Caribbean. North America is represented these three teams: Mexico, Canada and United States. Teams from countries such as Belize, Panama, Guatemala and others represent Central America. There are also 31 other members of CONCACAF who come from countries such as: Grenada, St. Lucia, Bermuda and Jamaica. In 1961 the nine members that founded this group included: Guatemala, Honduras, Panama, Cuba and Haiti. In 1962 four-member countries joined that were Trinidad and Tobago, Costa Rica, El Salvador and Bermuda. Bonaire who joined in 2013 is the newest member of CONCACAF.
Member countries are proud of the country they represent and always look forward to every upcoming soccer event. This huge soccer/futbol event excites every diehard fan worldwide. Reserve tickets for the 2013 CONCACAF tournament at your earliest convenience for the best seats and lowest prices.
