Youth Sports Injury Summit At U.S. Cellular Field August 8
CHICAGO, July 16, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — Parents and coaches who want to learn more about the growing number of sports injuries among youth athletes and ask questions of the doctors who treat the pros in Chicago are invited to attend a free sports injury summit at U.S. Cellular Field on August 8. The first annual Sports Medicine Summit is being hosted by Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush Center for Orthopedic Education & Learning. Attendees will have an opportunity to interact with some of the nation’s top sports medicine specialists who are team physicians for the Chicago White Sox and the Chicago Bulls.
The event includes breakfast, lunch, free parking and a tour of U.S. Cellular Field.
The forum will focus on prevention, treatment and rehabilitation for youth injuries, including overuse syndrome; hip, knee and back injuries; concussions; stress fractures and sports injury rehabilitation and prevention. Orthopedic surgeons, sports medicine specialists, physical therapists and certified athletic trainers from Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush will lead the interactive discussion.
Experts agree that youth sports injuries are on the rise. Findings presented at the 2013 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) revealed that sports is the leading cause of adolescent injuries in the U.S. Also, during that meeting it was announced that in the past 10 years, football injuries increased by 22.8 percent and soccer injuries rose by 10.8 percent among children ages five to 14. According to safe kids USA, every year more than 3.5 million kids under age 14 are treated for sports injuries and nearly half of all sports injuries suffered by middle and high school students are associated with overuse. And, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), more than half of all youth sports injuries are preventable.
These facts will be tackled at this first-ever summit by some of the nation’s top sports medicine experts.
