From January 22, 2014 to February 24, 2014, fans across America visited www.PostShreddedWheatGames.com and more than 1,800 voted on what the NSGA’s new sport should be in its biennial national competition. Voters chose from five sports – judo, weightlifting, power walking, fencing or soccer – to join the Senior Games and judo came out on top.
“We are thrilled to help bring judo to the Senior Games competitions in an effort to expand NSGA’s current offering and help more seniors get active and lead healthier lives,” said Mangala D’Sa, Marketing Director for Post Shredded Wheat. “Post Shredded Wheat’s original recipe is recommended by 9 out of 10 doctors to help maintain a healthy heart and help reduce the risk of heart disease, and can help keep you fueled not only when participating in Senior Games events, but during every part of your day.”
In addition to introducing a new sport, the cereal brand gave away grants to 20 adults over the age of 50 to compete as members of Team Post Shredded Wheat in their local Senior Games competition. More than 560 entries were submitted and winners were selected across the U.S. from San Diego, CA to Raleigh, NC. Through the grant, Post Shredded Wheat will pay the winners’ entry fees and provide them with active gear and heart-healthy cereal to help them achieve their athletic pursuits.
“The National Senior Games’ mission is to encourage people over 50 to try new things and get in the game, and we are thrilled to add judo to our roster of athletic events as it provides participants with a new, fun way to get involved,” Marc T. Riker, CEO of the NSGA said. “We welcome all new judo participants, as well as the 20 new athletes joining Team Post Shredded Wheat at their local games, and hope they continue to go for the gold.”
