United Press International to Host Media Leadership Summit in Washington

Posted on: Tuesday, 23 October 2007, 00:00 CDT

To commemorate its 100th Anniversary, United Press International (UPI) will host a landmark global leadership summit on the future of media, in Washington, DC on Wednesday, October 24, 2007 at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center.

Representatives from journalism, business, entertainment, technology, government, politics, education and social activism will jointly address critical issues raised by the dynamic change taking place in the world of media.

"UPI is pleased to support a gathering of prestigious traditional and new media leadership from around the world," said Nicholas Chiaia, UPI senior vice president. "We are excited to engage in a probing discussion of the challenges facing today's media from an editorial and business perspective."

UPI remains a strong advocate of developing journalistic excellence, so this event also marks the initiation of a partnership between UPI and various journalism schools around the world. "We are currently in discussion with institutions including the University of Hong Kong, American University of Beirut and Cairo, RMIT Melbourne, Australia, the University of Miami, and George Mason University," stated Chiaia.

Conference organizers Dale Peskin and Andrew Nachison from the 726 Group have gathered leading media figures for the event. In a collaborative environment, the participants will engage in conversations about how media can resolve conflict, advocate for democracy, and foster community engagement. In that context, they will consider the business, editorial, and social dynamics at play in the contemporary landscape. Participants will address such questions as whether crowd-sourced news must be balanced, whether and how media will shape the semantic Web 3.0, and the extent to which the mobile-social-networking generation is indifferent to mainstream news media. They will also consider how life-casting will impact mainstream media, and whether the news media will remain the "Fourth Estate."
