What does Safe Sex have to do with Sunscreen? New PSA takes a different approach to a serious problem
COCOA BEACH, Fla., May 20, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — Sun Bum, a sun care company that’s developed a cult like following since it hit the beaches in 2010, today released a smart and sexy PSA (Public Service Announcement) titled “One Night Stand.” With one in five Americans getting diagnosed with skin cancer this year, the message couldn’t be more timely or more critical, but most PSA’s and warnings aim to tap into consumer’s fear.
“For the most part, scare tactics don’t really work on us”, said Tom Rinks, President and co-founder of Sun Bum, “not for smoking, religion, or even sunscreen. You’ve just gotta show a way of living that is actually more appealing than the alternative, and hope people choose it. At Sun Bum, we try not to take ourselves too seriously, but we wanted to get the message out there for summer and this seemed like a fun, non-threatening way to do it.”
The 30 second spot features a surfer dude wearing a cheap sun costume, coming out of a motel room with a sexy blonde girl, wearing just a t-shirt and a smile. After some groping and a goodbye kiss, the dude in the sun suit leaves and the girl goes back in the room. The implication is that they have spent the night together after a chance meeting. The tag line then fades up and reads “It’s okay to love the sun, just be sure to use protection.”
