WASHINGTON, May 22, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Following is the daily “Profile America” feature from the U.S. Census Bureau:

Profile America – Thursday, May 22nd.( )We take for granted the many entertainment options so readily at hand because of the World Wide Web. Yet it sometimes brings you up short when you realize how new is this experience. It was just 21 years ago on this date that a movie was digitized and loaded onto the Internet. In 1993, just under 23 percent of U.S. households had computers, and a negligible number accessed the Internet with early browsers, searching a mere 600 websites. That first movie was no recognized Hollywood classic like Casablanca, but an offbeat science fiction thriller called “Wax, or the Discovery of Television Among the Bees.” As theoretically infinite as it is, the Internet doesn’t suffer from lack of action content. Across the U.S., there are almost 13,000 film and video production establishments, employing over 131,000 people. Profile America is in its17th year as a public service of the U.S. Census Bureau.
