Rising Star of Scots Music in North Gig
One of the bright new stars of Scottish traditional music plays the Old Brewery at Cromarty this evening.
Jenna Reid is regarded as not only one of Shetland’s best fiddle players, but also one of the nation’s top players.
It was no surprise when she was nominated as “best instrumentalist” at last year’s Scots Trad Music Awards.
She grew up immersed in the fiddle music of the Shetland and started to play at the age of nine, taught by the late Dr Tom Anderson.
Jenna also started performing very young with the Shetland band Filska.
Under the direction of her mother Joyce, and, with sister Bethany and friend Gemma Wilson, Filska made a name for themselves in Scotland and beyond.
She then joined Gaelic super-group Dochas, as well as starting to branch out more on her own.
In 2005, she recorded her first highly-regarded solo album, With Silver & All, as a showcase of not only her fiddle playing, but also her compositional skills.
Her most recent CD, The Laughing Cow, was launched to great acclaim at this year’s Celtic Connections.
Jenna says she is now committed to recording and performing music full-time, and that it is “a privilege” to be able to make a living out of doing something she loves and enjoys.
She will be joined at the Old Brewery by another great Scottish instrumentalist, Kevin MacKenzie.
