A HANDYMAN turned stage star will be appealing for votes tonight as he battles for the chance to represent Britain in the Eurovision Song Contest.

Rob McVeigh, from Rotherham, was dubbed Rob the Builder when he appeared in the BBC programme Any Dream Will Do.

Although his dreams of a West End role came to an end when he was eliminated in the fifth show, he didn’t give up on stardom and continued to audition for a number of roles, as well as appearing in the pantomime Cinderella at Sheffield’s Lyceum theatre.

Tonight he will be competing against five other acts in Eurovision: Your Decision, to be broadcast tonight on BBC1 at 7pm.

The competition includes former X-Factor contestant Andy Abrahams – dubbed the “singing dustman” – and ex-EastEnder Michelle Gayle.

Rob, 24. said he was nervous, but excited.

He said: “The song I’m singing is called I Owe It All To You. It really is a great message for me, as I do owe the public a great big thank you for putting me where I am today.”
