OSCAR-winner Marion Cotillard was yesterday forced into an embarrassing climbdown over her accusations that America made up the 9/11 attacks.

The French actress, 32, claimed she’d been “misunderstood” when saying the US lied about major events including the New York terror outrage and the 1969 Moon landings.

Cotillard, who also got a Bafta for playing Edith Piaf in La Vie en Rose, faced losing millions in a boycott by the patriotic Hollywood film industry.

So her lawyer Vincent Tolesano said: “Marion never meant to question the attacks … and regrets that old remarks have been taken out of context.”

Greenpeace activist Cotillard, due to start filming with Johnny Depp next week, claimed on French TV last year the Americans destroyed the Twin Towers themselves.
