Prada Reaches Out to Teens
By Ron Gonzales FOR THE JOURNAL
In the book and movie titled “The Devil Wears Prada,” one of the main characters, Andrea Sachs, dreams of working for a highpowered fashion magazine editor and in fact gets to live out her dream. As for the musical group with the same name, its goals are just a tad more modest: reach every teenager who has no one else to turn to.
The Christian metalcore act, in existence since 2005, has quickly risen to heights it never expected. A 2005 demo (“Patterns of a Horizon”) led to a deal with Rise Records, and the buzz surrounding the band’s August 2007 release, “Plagues,” allowed it to rise to number 57 on the Billboard charts. Yet, facts and figures don’t excite guitarist Jeremy DePoyster as much as being able to meet with fans at shows, and share in the stories they might have.
“There’s a lot of kids that won’t look to anyone else except for their favorite bands,” DePoyster said in a Journal interview. “And I just like to be able to talk to them about what they like, the music and how it’s influencing them. It makes us, as a band, want to be more positive as role models and the way we lead our lives.”
The band has scheduled an in-store appearance at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Hastings, 800A Juan Tabo NE, then it’s back Downtown for its set in support of Silverstein. The two bands recently trekked across Canada and into a series of sold-out shows, and touring will be the norm for The Devil Wears Prada all the way through the summer.
In May, the band heads Down Under for the Plagues Across Australia Tour, its first such jaunt there, and DePoyster admitted to being giddy to have the chance.
“Part of it is our being selfish, and just wanting to go,” DePoyster said. “But to be able to go and play, and talk to people over there and spread our music, it’s just so unreal. We have to do it.”
Then the band heads back to the States for the annual Warped Tour, which surprisingly it has never played despite its all-star indie status.
“For me, it’s very cool because I always went to Warped Tour,” DePoyster said. “I always dreamed of playing it some time but never thought I actually would. I think it’s the ultimate tour for us and the kind of band we are.”
DePoyster said that once the Warped Tour wraps, the band will take about a month off before congregating once again to write the follow-up to “Plagues.”
